At Darling Downs Surgical Oncology (DDSO), your care doesn't end when your surgery is complete.

Dr Peter O'Donohue remains personally involved throughout your postoperative recovery, providing continuity of care from your hospital stay through to wound reviews, pathology results, and follow-up appointments.

You'll continue to see the surgeon who performed your operation, supported by a local team that understands your care needs.

Personally Managed Post-Operative Care

For patients undergoing surgery at St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital, Dr O'Donohue personally reviews his patients during their hospital stay. 

Following discharge, routine post-operative appointments are conducted directly with Dr O'Donohue at our Toowoomba practice.

These post-operative appointments may include:

Wound assessment and dressing reviews

• Suture removal
• Skin graft and flap checks
• Review and discussion of pathology results
• Assessment of healing and recovery
• Planning further treatment or surveillance where required

Our team coordinates your appointments and ongoing wound care while keeping your GP informed of relevant findings and treatment plans.

What If You Have Concerns After Surgery?

We understand that questions or concerns can arise during recovery. Whether you're worried about wound healing, discomfort, dressings, or unexpected symptoms, our team can assist in arranging an appropriate review.

As a locally based surgeon, Dr. O'Donohue is available to assess postoperative concerns in Toowoomba, with urgent appointments prioritised according to clinical needs and availability. 

If you develop severe symptoms, such as significant bleeding, difficulty breathing, or chest pain, seek emergency medical attention rather than waiting for a clinic appointment.

Post-Operative Appointments and Fees

Routine post-operative consultations with Dr O'Donohue are provided without an additional consultation fee. These appointments form part of your ongoing surgical follow-up care. If additional investigations, procedures, or services from other providers are required, separate charges may apply. Our team will explain these where possible.

Our aim is to provide appropriate surgical follow-up without unnecessary appointments or additional demands on your GP.

Care for Regional Patients

We care for patients from Toowoomba, the Darling Downs, and surrounding regional communities. Most post-operative appointments are conducted face to face to allow Dr O'Donohue to assess your recovery and wound healing.

For patients travelling from regional or rural areas, alternative arrangements may be considered where clinically appropriate. Our priority is to ensure your follow-up is safe, practical, and suited to your individual circumstances.
