Initial Appointment

Initial Appointment

Your care starts with a conversation.

Whether you've been referred for breast cancer, melanoma, skin cancer or another surgical concern, we understand that meeting a surgeon can feel daunting, particularly when you're facing a new diagnosis.

At Darling Downs Surgical Oncology (DDSO), Dr Peter O'Donohue takes the time to understand your concerns, review your medical information and explain your treatment options.

Our aim is to ensure you leave your appointment with a clearer understanding of your diagnosis, the recommended next steps and what to expect from your care.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

During your consultation, Dr O'Donohue will:

  • Discuss your medical history, symptoms and concerns
  • Review relevant imaging, pathology and biopsy results
  • Perform a physical examination where appropriate
  • Explain your diagnosis and available treatment options
  • Discuss whether surgery or further investigations are recommended
  • Answer your questions and outline the next steps

The length of your consultation will depend on your condition and individual needs.

We want you to feel informed, comfortable asking questions and involved in decisions about your care.

Consultation Fees

Darling Downs Surgical Oncology is a private specialist surgical practice.

Consultation fees are payable on the day of your appointment. Medicare rebates are available for eligible consultations when you have a valid referral.

Our reception team will explain the consultation fee and anticipated Medicare rebate when booking your appointment.

We can assist with submitting your Medicare claim electronically. Please ensure your bank details are up to date with Medicare.

If Surgery Is Recommended

Not every patient requires surgery. Some conditions may be managed with further investigations, monitoring or referral to another specialist.

If surgery is recommended, Dr O'Donohue will explain the proposed procedure, expected recovery, potential risks and available treatment options.

Our team will then guide you through the surgical booking process, including hospital arrangements, preoperative requirements and financial information.

Depending on your procedure, separate fees may apply from:

  • Dr Peter O'Donohue
  • St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital
  • Your anaesthetist
  • A surgical assistant, where required
  • Pathology or imaging providers

We will explain Dr O'Donohue's surgical fees and assist you in understanding the other costs you may need to confirm before proceeding.

Your Care Beyond the First Appointment

Your care doesn't end when you leave the consulting room.

As a locally based surgeon, Dr O'Donohue remains personally involved in your surgical care, including postoperative hospital reviews and follow-up appointments.

Our team helps coordinate investigations, surgical bookings, pathology results and wound care, while keeping your referring doctor informed.

From your first consultation through to recovery, our focus is on clear communication, coordinated care and a familiar team supporting you along the way.

Booking Your Appointment

We welcome referrals for breast cancer, benign breast conditions, melanoma, and skin cancer.

A valid GP or specialist referral is required to access applicable Medicare rebates.

Urgent referrals are prioritised according to clinical need.
