Frequently Asked Questions - General

Yes, a referral from your GP or specialist is required to book an appointment. This ensures your visit is Medicare-rebatable and allows Dr O'Donohue to coordinate care with your primary doctor. 


Consultations and surgeries are performed at St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital. Telehealth appointments are available (where appropriate). Patients may be eligible for treatment in our Minor Procedure Room; eliminating the need for a hospital admission. 


Dr O’Donohue specialises in:

  • Breast cancer and benign breast conditions
  • Melanoma and skin cancer
  • General surgical conditions, including hernias, gallbladder issues, haemorrhoids, pilonidal disease, and acute surgical presentations (e.g. appendicitis).


Urgent referrals are prioritised. Routine appointments are generally available within 1–2 weeks. Your GP or specialist can contact the practice directly for triage. All patients are contacted within 24 hours of receipt of referral.

Frequently Asked Questions - Melanoma and Skin Cancer

Yes. If you’ve had a skin cancer or melanoma diagnosis from MoleScan, a GP-led skin clinic, a Vectra imaging provider, or any other screening service, you are welcome to see Dr O’Donohue for specialist assessment and management. 


Dr O’Donohue provides specialist surgical care for all areas of the body, including complex or cosmetically sensitive sites such as the face, scalp, ears, and neck. 


You will need a referral from your GP or specialist to book an appointment. Once we receive your referral, our team will arrange a timely consultation and ensure all relevant imaging and pathology reports are forwarded to Dr O’Donohue for review.

We work closely with local GPs, skin clinics and diagnostic services to provide coordinated, specialist care for melanoma and skin cancers.


Dr O’Donohue is a specialist surgical oncologist with advanced training in managing complex, high-risk, or recurrent melanoma and skin cancers. He routinely performs surgery in challenging areas such as the face, neck, scalp, ears, and lower limbs, and is experienced in managing cases that require wider excisions, reconstructive planning, or lymph node procedures.


Patients with more intricate presentations including advanced melanoma, difficult tumour locations, or cancers that have returned after previous treatment are often referred to Dr O’Donohue for his subspecialist expertise and coordinated, multidisciplinary approach.


 Yes. Dr O’Donohue provides specialist surgical care for all body sites, including high-precision areas such as the face, neck, scalp, ears, and nose, as well as the trunk and limbs. He routinely manages complex or cosmetically sensitive skin cancers and melanoma. 


Our Minor Procedure Clinic allows many procedures to be completed safely and conveniently onsite.


These include:

  • Skin cancer and melanoma excisions
  • Diagnostic biopsies
  • Removal of suspicious moles or lesions
  • Scar revisions
  • Small soft tissue procedures


Most procedures can be performed under local anaesthetic, without needing a hospital theatre booking. 


Minor procedures incur a $250 facility fee (no Medicare rebate).
All other items — including the procedure itself, anaesthetic, and follow-up are bulk billed. Costs are always confirmed before your procedure so you know exactly what to expect.
