Breast Cancer Surgery

Breast Cancer Surgery in Toowoomba

Breast cancer surgery is a crucial component of treatment, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Dr Peter O'Donohue is an Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon who specializes in techniques that may include breast-conserving surgery as well as mastectomy procedures when necessary, all aimed at preserving or restoring breast shape. Your surgical options will depend on various factors such as the type, size, and location of the cancer, your breast anatomy, whether lymph nodes are involved, and your personal preferences. Dr O'Donohue will take the time to discuss your options and collaborate with you to create a tailored surgical plan that considers both your cancer treatment and your future after surgery.

Breast Cancer Surgeries

Breast-Conserving Surgery (Lumpectomy)

Breast-conserving surgery, also known as oncoplastic breast surgery, removes cancerous tissue along with a margin of surrounding breast tissue, while preserving as much of the breast as possible. Dr O'Donohue employs oncoplastic techniques where appropriate to help maintain the shape and appearance of the breast following surgery. After breast-conserving surgery, radiotherapy is usually recommended to enhance treatment outcomes, distinguishing it from more extensive mastectomy procedures.

Oncoplastic Breast Surgery & Local Perforator Flaps

Oncoplastic breast surgery combines breast cancer removal with reconstructive techniques to help preserve or restore the breast's natural shape, making it a valuable option for breast-conserving surgery. In selected patients, Dr O'Donohue may utilize a local perforator flap, which involves moving nearby tissue into the area where the cancer was removed. This method can allow for breast conservation in certain cases where standard mastectomy procedures might otherwise result in a significant change in breast shape.

Mastectomy

A mastectomy involves removing breast tissue to treat or lower the risk of breast cancer. Depending on factors such as the extent or location of the cancer, previous treatments, genetic risks, or personal preferences, a mastectomy may be recommended over breast-conserving surgery. Dr O'Donohue will discuss various mastectomy procedures, including oncoplastic breast surgery, as well as whether breast reconstruction is suitable and what options may be available.

Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy

A sentinel lymph node biopsy checks the first lymph node or nodes that breast cancer cells are most likely to reach. During breast-conserving surgery, these nodes are identified and removed for examination to help determine whether cancer has spread beyond the breast. Not every patient requires this procedure. Dr O'Donohue will explain whether it is appropriate for your diagnosis and how it relates to mastectomy procedures or oncoplastic breast surgery.

Axillary Lymph Node Dissection (Clearance)

An axillary lymph node dissection involves removing lymph nodes from the armpit when more extensive lymph node surgery is required, especially in the context of breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy procedures. This procedure is generally considered when cancer has spread to the lymph nodes and further surgical treatment, such as oncoplastic breast surgery, is indicated. Dr O'Donohue will discuss the benefits, risks, and possible side effects, including lymphoedema, and how these can be managed.

Aftercare and Recovery

Aftercare and Recovery

Recovery following breast cancer surgery varies depending on the procedure, such as breast-conserving surgery, mastectomy procedures, or oncoplastics breast surgery, as well as your individual circumstances. Dr. O'Donohue will provide clear guidance on wound care, managing discomfort, and safely returning to everyday activities.

Some patients may require surgical drains, dressings, or additional support during recovery. Your care will be tailored to your specific procedure and individual needs.
