Darling Downs Surgical Oncology (DDSO) provides specialist breast, melanoma, skin cancer and selected general surgical services, led by Dr Peter O'Donohue at St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital.

We offer responsive referral pathways for patients across Toowoomba and the Darling Downs, with priority assessment for newly diagnosed cancers and coordinated care from consultation through recovery.

What We Treat

Breast Surgery

• Suspected or confirmed breast cancer
• Oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery
• Mastectomy and breast reconstruction
• Sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary surgery
• Benign breast conditions and second opinions

Melanoma Surgery

• Newly diagnosed melanoma and wide local excision
• Sentinel lymph node biopsy assessment
• Complex melanoma excision and reconstruction
• Regional lymph node involvement
• Recurrent melanoma and second opinions

Please include histopathology, particularly Breslow thickness, ulceration and excision margins, where available.

Skin Cancer Surgery

• Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
• Large, recurrent or complex skin cancers
• Facial and other anatomically challenging lesions
• Skin grafts and flap reconstruction
• Lesions unsuitable for excision in general practice

Suitable procedures can be performed under local anaesthetic in our Minor Procedure Clinic, without hospital admission.

Urgent Referrals

New cancer diagnoses and clinically urgent cases are prioritised.

We aim to contact referred patients on the same business day and arrange specialist assessment according to clinical urgency.

We Manage Postoperative Care

Your patient's surgical follow-up stays with Dr O'Donohue

As a locally based surgeon, Dr O'Donohue personally reviews his admitted patients at St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital and provides ongoing postoperative care through DDSO.

Our team coordinates wound reviews, pathology results, further investigations and specialist referrals, with communication back to the referring GP.

Routine postoperative consultations are provided without an additional consultation fee.

Our aim is straightforward: coordinated surgical care for your patients, without unnecessary postoperative workload returning to your practice.
