About

Dr Peter O’Donohue B.Sc MBBS M.Clin.Epid FRACS

 Dr Peter O’Donohue is a Specialist General Surgeon with subspeciality training in Breast Cancer, Melanoma and Oncoplastic Surgery.


Dr O’Donohue consults and operates privately at St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital and is a full member of Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand (BreastSurgANZ). He concurrently holds a public appointment as a Consultant General Surgeon at Toowoomba Base Hospital, where he provides subspecialist services in breast cancer and melanoma, and provides outreach surgical services to Kingaroy Hospital. He actively participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings within the region and values collaborative care with local medical specialists. 


Dr O’Donohue was raised in Maryborough and relocated to Brisbane to complete a Bachelor of Science (Biomedicine) at the University of Queensland in 2005. He obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Griffith University in 2009 before obtaining a Masters of Clinical Epidemiology from the university of Newcastle in 2012. Dr O’Donohue was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2020. 


Dr O’Donohue completed advanced general surgical training in Queensland. He subsequently completed post fellowship training at Townsville University Hospital (acute general surgery) and Fiona Stanley Hospital (endocrine surgery), Perth, prior to being accepted to train as an oncoplastic breast and melanoma surgeon through BreastSurgANZ. He completed first year training at the renowned Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, and second year training at Auckland City Hospital. 


Outside of his public and private appointments, Dr O’Donohue is a CCrISP® Instructor for the Royal College of Surgeons; where he takes pride in mentoring doctors in the development of simple, useful skills for managing critically ill patients. He also participates in the BreastSurgANZ Quality Audit (BQA), directed by Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand and managed by the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS).  The BQA aims to improve the quality of surgical care for patients with early and locally advanced breast cancer in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. 


Dr O’Donohue is known for his honest, calm and down-to-earth approach, balanced by his technical expertise, surgical skills and familiarity with the latest best-practice surgical techniques. 


He is passionate about providing specialist breast and surgical oncology services within Toowoomba and the Darling Downs Region and feels privileged to treat patients in his local community. When Dr O’Donohue is not spending time with his patients, he loves spending time with his young family, friends and dogs, and enjoys running and Pilates.
